The JU women’s basketball team announced the signing of a pair of guards from the state of Georgia, Drameeka Griggs of Jonesboro High School and Abril Peeples of Americus-Sumter High School, to National Letters of Intent as the Dolphins begin construction of their 2009 recruiting class.

Griggs, a 5-foot-5 senior point guard, has led the Cardinals to three consecutive regional appearances and the state playoffs as a junior. Along with her court success, Griggs is a member of the National Honors Society and has been named to the honor roll all three years. In AAU play, she has been a member of the Georgia Dream Team.

"Drameka brings us great speed at the point guard position,” said JU head coach Jill Dunn. “She will be able to pressure our opponents from baseline to baseline and will fit in well with our transition game. She will be able to get the ball up the floor very quickly for us."

Peeples, a 5-foot-7 senior guard, has led the Panthers to a combined 61-20 overall record including a 25-3 mark and a Sweet 16 appearance in the state playoffs as a junior. During that season, she averaged 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. As a sophomore, she averaged 14 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. As freshman, she earned team “Rookie of the Year” honors after averaging 15 points, five assists, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals. "Abril is a scoring guard,” Dunn said. “She has a scorer’s mentality and likes to have the ball in her hands. She can score off the dribble and also shoots the 3-pointer."

JU will return to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. as the Dolphins host George Mason at Swisher Gymnasium. The contest can be seen live on as part of ASun.TV.
