Women’s basketball falls at North Florida, 58-50
The JU women’s basketball team may be in the same city, but the Dolphins’ road woes continue as they fell at North Florida, 58-50, on Wednesday night in Atlantic Sun action at UNF area in Jacksonville, Fla.

Brittany Kirkland paced the Ospreys (6-14, 3-8) with 16 points and seven assists, while Jadhken Kerr added eight points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

The Ospreys shot 47.1 percent (24-51) from the floor to secure their first win over the Dolphins (5-14, 4-7) since 2006. They also secured a point in the annual SunTrust River City Rumble standings.

“We did not have our best game,” said JU head coach Jill Dunn. “Once again, we couldn’t find our shooting touch on the road and it hurt us. We have to figure out how to win on the road if we want to make the conference tournament.”

Freshman guard Drameka Griggs had a game-high 23 points to lead the Dolphins, who shot 31.3 percent from the floor (20-64) on the night. They outscored the Ospreys in bench points (29-16), but were edged in paint (30-26) and fast break points (14-6).

Trailing 25-23 at half, the Dolphins kept the deficit within four points before the Ospreys exploded for a 20-6 run that was capped on three straight buckets by Shennette Sheffield to give UNF a 54-37 lead (7:49).

A jumper by senior forward Desarae Johnson and three-pointer by sophomore guard Jessica George in the final two minutes cut the JU deficit to less than 10 points, but UNF held on for the victory.

Junior forward Taneskei Richardson added eight points and seven rebounds for the Dolphins. Senior guard Courtney Jackson recorded eight points to go along with four points.

After falling behind 10-4 in the first half, the Dolphins put together a 13-4 stretch capped on a layup by Griggs (8:34) to take a 17-14 advantage. Kerr hit two three pointers for UNF inside of an 11-0 run to help the Ospreys retake the lead at 25-17 (4:39). Griggs broke the dry spell by scoring the final six JU points to cut the deficit to 25-23 at half time.

The Ospreys would get eight points and eight boards from Arlande Cherizol, while Kim Baker and Larkira Jones each added seven points.

The Dolphins return to action on Feb. 1 when they travel to play USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C. at 7 p.m.
