Women’s basketball plays at USC Upstate on Monday
The JU women’s basketball team is looking for a new kind of streak as the Dolphins play USC Upstate on Monday at 7 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.

The Dolphins (5-14, 4-7 Atlantic Sun) want to snap their recent streak of five losses in the last seven games after opening the New Year with wins against Mercer and Kennesaw State.

“It’s not about how you start a season, but how you finish it,” said JU head coach Jill Dunn. “Right now, we need to start putting together our best basketball so we can use the momentum to make the conference tournament and go further. We had a couple of good practices this week so we are excited to see where that can lead us.”

Last time out, the Dolphins got a game-high 23 points from freshman guard Drameka Griggs, but UNF used a 20-6 second half run to earn a 58-50 win in the latest SunTrust River City Rumble battle on Jan. 27.

JU also got eight points and seven boards from junior forward Taneskei Richardson, while senior guard Courtney Jackson recorded eight rebounds.

The Spartans (13-7, 7-4) may be the hottest team in the A-Sun, winning seven of their last nine games in conference play. A large part of USC Upstate’s success can be traced to junior forward Chelsea McMillan, who is averaging 14.6 points per game and bringing down at least 10 boards a contest.

Monday’s contest is the second meeting between the two schools in less than nine days. The Spartans took the first game at Swisher Gymnasium, 79-72, on Jan. 23.

McMillan (24) and freshman guard Tee’Ara Copney (23) each recorded 20-point efforts to pace USC Upstate, while sophomore Jessica George led five JU players in double figures with 15 points.
