The JU women’s basketball team is no longer winless on the road as the Dolphins used a late second half run to down Belmont, 54-44, in Atlantic Sun action on Saturday at the Curb Event Center in Nashville, Tenn.
Freshman guard Drameka Griggs had a game-high 12 points to help the Dolphins (6-15, 5-8 A-Sun) break a 13-game road losing streak and earn their first-ever win over the Bruins (11-11, 6-8) in Nashville. Junior center Lynsey Paschal added 10 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocks off the bench for JU. The Dolphins finished with a game-best 31.7 (19-60) field goal percentage and shot 68.4 percent (13-19) from the charity stripe. They edged the Bruins in rebounds (45-42), while also recording game-best in blocks (6) and steals (8). “Defense was the key to this win,” said JU head coach Jill Dunn. “We worked on our defense all week and were really in tune with it in the game. I am happy to get this win and our goal is to improve on what we did for today for our contest on Monday.” Cacy Burtnett had 10 points to lead the Bruins, who finished shooting 25.5 percent (14-55) from the floor as a team and went just 2-for-17 from beyond the arc. In the second half, the Bruins had a couple of early buckets to cut into the Dolphins’ lead before Griggs connected on a three-point play at 15:42 to give JU a 38-24 advantage. The Bruins erased the deficit with a 15-0 run, capped on a three-point play by Amber Rockwell to give Belmont a 39-38 lead (8:51). Pascal and Griggs each recorded two scores during an 9-0 stretch to help JU regain a 47-39 lead with three minutes remaining. Belmont’s Crystal Kester cut it to 47-42 on a pair of free throws (2:33), but the Dolphins held the Bruins to just a bucket in the final two minutes and hit seven free throws down the stretch to secure the win. Sophomore guard Ashanti Williams added seven points for JU, while senior forward Crystal Grable pulled down 12 rebounds in the win. In the first half, the Bruins missed their first 10 shots, which helped the Dolphins build a 10-3 lead (13:23). Belmont made its next two field goal attempts before Griggs recorded two free throws to push JU’s lead back to seven. Burtnett hit a bucket to pull the Bruins within a three, 17-14, at 6:12. The Dolphins would catch fire as they closed the half on a 16-2 run, capped by a freshman guard Maggie Wilson three-pointer in the final 15 seconds, to take a 33-17 lead into the locker room. Rockwell and Shaundra Strayhorn each finished with eight points for the Bruins, while Kristin Bunch added 12 rebounds and four points. The Dolphins finish their four-game road trip on Monday against Lipscomb at 8 p.m. ET. |
