Women’s basketball begins final home swing on Thursday
Senior foward Desarae Johnson is nine blocks away from tying the JU's all-time record as she enters the final week of the season.
The JU women’s basketball team looks to create some momentum in the final week of the season as the Dolphins host Campbell on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Dolphins’ (8-18, 7-11) matchup against the Camels (14-13, 9-9), as well as the men’s game later that evening, is free to all fans wishing to attend with the help of the game sponsor- the MPS Group. JU will play ETSU, which has already clinched the No. 1 seed in the A-Sun Tournament, on Saturday in the home finale at noon. The four Dolphin seniors will be honored in a presentation at halftime of the men’s game. “We are excited for this week,” said JU head coach Jill Dunn. “Our goal is to build some good momentum before we enter the conference tournament. These are two tough opponents coming in this week, but we are ready for the challenge. We also want to send the seniors out on a good note and I know our team will battle to achieve that for them.” The Dolphins will be looking for the sweet refuge of their home court after falling to Kennesaw State (Feb. 18) and Mercer (Feb. 20) last week in their final road trip of the season. The Owls erased a 10-point deficit in the final eight minutes and made 26 free throws to down the Dolphins, 65-62, and secure their first victory at home against JU. Two days later, the Dolphins struggled shooting, hitting 33.3 percent from the floor, en route to a 63-46 loss at Mercer in Macon, Ga. Freshman guard Drameka Griggs averaged a team-best 9.5 point per game, while recording six assists and five steals. Senior forward Desarae Johnson added 14 rebounds for the week to go along with three steals and two blocks. Johnson also enters the week just nine blocks away from tying Ashley Williams (128) for the top spot in the all-time records. The Camels enter the week on a small skid having lost four of their last five contests. Campbell’s last week came against Mercer, 66-60, on Feb 13 at home. Earlier this season, the Camels broke a six-game losing streak against the Dolphins with a 74-63 victory in Buies Creek, N.C. to open the conference schedule on Dec. 19. The Lady Buccaneers (18-8, 16-2) knocked off USC Upstate at home on Monday, 88-67, to secure their 14th victory in the last 15 contests. In the first meeting on Dec. 21, the Dolphins had two players hit the 20-point barrier, but the Lady Bucs got 23 points and 11 rebounds from Siarre Evans, while shooting a staggering 90.0 percent from the free-throw line (27-30) to earn a 77-72 win in Johnson City, Tenn.
