Cold shooting dooms JU in 50-46 loss to UNF
A frigid shooting night doomed the JU women’s basketball team as they fell 50-46 to UNF in the General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament semifinals.

The Dolphins (10-20) hit just 15-of-61 from the floor (24.6 percent) and started the game by hitting just two of their first 23 shots. Gigi Thomas scored a game-high 12 points, hitting just 4-of-13 from the floor with seven rebounds.

UNF (12-19) led from the opening tip, getting 10 points from Juliemay Syquio and Brittany Kirkland.

“This was a tough loss,” said JU head coach Jill Dunn. “We were cold tonight and just couldn’t get anything to go down.”

North Florida held a 42-37 edge in rebounding, but JU had 14 offensive rebounds – but only scored 11 points.

Trailing by nine at halftime, UNF extended the lead to 12 in the first four minutes of the second half when Jadhken Kerr knocked down her first 3-pointer of the game.

The Dolphins used a 10-0 run to get back into the game, with Danielle Gray finishing off an old-fashioned 3-point play to cut the deficit to 31-29 with 12:20 left in the game.

UNF answered with a 10-1 run, with Kim Baker’s 3-point play capping the run to give the Ospreys a 41-30 lead with 6:51 remaining.

Jacksonville had one more run left in them, battling back to be down two, 48-46, after Thomas’ 3-pointers with 50 seconds left in regulation.

After getting a Syquio to miss a layup, JU raced up the floor, but Thomas turned the ball over on a drive in the lane and UNF hit a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left to send the Ospreys into the championship game.

Taneskei Richardson was a big inside force for JU , scoring 10 points and pulling down a team-high eight rebounds.

Despite hitting just 7-of-32 from the floor in the first half, JU trailed by just nine, 26-17, at halftime.
