Women’s basketball downs Tampa in exhibition action, 70-41
The JU women’s basketball team had all three of its seniors hit double-figures to knock off Tampa, 70-41, in exhibition action on Saturday afternoon at Swisher Gymnasium.
Senior guard GiGI Thomas recorded 17 points and four steals to pace the Dolphins offense, while senior forward Taneskei Richardson added 12 points and nine rebounds. Senior forward Lynsey Paschal rounded out the group with 10 points and four boards.
“This was a good start from us,” said JU head coach Jill Dunn. “We had a lot of positives from our first action on the court. There are some things we need to work on before next week’s opener, but I was pleased with the effort today.”
The Dolphins beat the Spartans in every category, including recording 30 points off of 27 Tampa turnovers and 17 JU steals. The Dolphins also had 19-2 advantage in fast break points.
In the first half, Thomas recorded two early three-pointers and had a breakaway layup on a steal to give JU a 12-5 lead at 14:44. Tampa’s Jaleesa Harmon hit consecutive free throws to make it 14-7 (13:55) before the Dolphins went on a 20-7 run to close out the half. Thomas and Richardson each had scores in the final two minutes to give the Dolphins a 34-14 lead into the locker room.
Taja Green and Lindsey Green each finished with 10 points pace the Spartans offense, while Monique Johnson tallied six points.
The Spartans went on a 4-0 run to start the second half, but they weren’t able to cut any closer as Thomas recorded a three-point play at 17:12 to put the Dolphins back up by 20 points. Consecutive steals for layups by junior guard Crystal Bell gave JU a 53-27 lead (10:14), while a free throw from freshman guard Ciara McLee less than three minutes later gave the Dolphins a 30-point advantage to secure the win.
Bell finished with eight points, while McLee and fellow freshman Madison Scott each had five points in their first collegiate game.
The Dolphins open the regular season on Nov. 12 against USF in Tampa, Fla. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
