Women’s basketball outlasts Howard, 60-52
The JU women’s basketball team survived a sluggish shooting night to down Howard, 60-52, on Tuesday in Swisher Gymnasium.

Senior guard GiGi Thomas scored a team-high 17 points, while senior forward Taneskei Richardson added 16 points and 13 rebounds to pace the Dolphins (3-1) to their third straight win at home.

“We are happy to get the win,” said JU head coach Jill Dunn. “It seems like we always struggle a little bit in the game before the Thanksgiving break, but our team did what we had to do to secure the victory. Hopefully, we can carry this momentum on the road for Saturday’s game at Hampton.”

Neither team found their shooting rhythm as the Dolphins finished with a 32.7 field goal percentage, while the Lady Bison (2-3) squeaked out a game-best 33.3 percent (20-60) from the floor. JU was able to get a 19-10 edge in 2nd chance points and held Howard to no three-pointers in the game (0-4).

With the score tied at 31-31 in the second half, Thomas and junior guard Jessica George hit consecutive three pointers to cap a 14-4 run and give JU a 45-35 advantage (10:45). The Lady Bison cut the deficit to one, 47-46, on a free throw from Cheyenne Curley-Payne (7:07), but consecutive free throws from senior forward Lynsey Paschal less than two minutes later built the JU lead back to 53-48.

Howard would not go away after making it 55-52 on a layup by Curley-Payne at 1:28. Despite missing the back end of two free throws, the Dolphins forced the Lady Bison to miss a three-pointer and created two turnovers in the final minute to hang on for the win.

Saaida Doyle had a game-high 25 points and 14 rebounds for Howard, while Curley-Payne added 17 points and four assists to help the cause.

In the first half, the Dolphins built a 9-4 advantage on a breakaway layup from Thomas (12:21). The Lady Bison used a 18-1 run over the next eight minutes, capped by a jumper from Nicole Deterville to take a 22-15 lead (3:37). Junior guard Ashanti Williams closed a 7-0 JU run with a three-pointer in the final five seconds to tie the game, 22-22, at half time.

Williams and Paschal each finished with seven points for the Dolphins, while George finished with six points and four rebounds.

The Dolphins take their winning streak to the road as JU faces Hampton on Saturday in Hampton, Va. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
