Women’s basketball falls to N.C. State, 80-42
North Carolina State took advantage of a slow start by the JU women’s basketball team for an 80-42 victory on Wednesday in Reynolds Coliseum.
Krystal Barrett tallied 14 points to lead five Wolfpack (4-0) players in double-figures. Erica Donovan had 13 points, while Boane Holston finished with 12 points in helping the cause.
“We got off to a bad start,” JU head coach Jill Dunn said. “We can’t control the tempo if we are digging ourselves out of a hole. Once we learn to be more consistent then we can get back to our style of basketball.”
The Dolphins (0-4) shot 23.5 percent (8-34) from the floor in the first half to match their worst start since the 2001-02 season. The Wolfpack finished with 39.0 field goal percentage, while holding the advantage in rebounds (64-40), points in the paint (42) and blocks (11).
In the first half, the Dolphins took a 5-4 lead on a three-pointer from sophomore Abril Peeples (18:59). Kody Burke scored five of NC State’s next eight points for a 12-5 advantage. Peeples continued to be the Dolphins only offense with two more bucks to cut the deficit to 17-9 at 12:35. The Dolphins got a three-point play from senior Crystal Bell at 9:46, but a Burke layup capped an 11-1 NC State run for a 36-14 lead (4:59). Freshman Chelsea Faulhaber recorded a bucket to cut the JU deficit to 38-20 at half time.
Peeples led the Dolphins with 13 points, with 11 coming in the first half. Bell and junior Maggie Wilson each finished with eight points, while junior Tracie Sneed added seven points.
NC State opened the second half on 15-4 stretch, capped on a Holston free throw, for a 53-24 lead (14:34). Wilson broke the stretch with a jumper at 13:30, but Myisha Goodwin-Coleman had a jumper less than two minutes later to help the Wolfpack hang onto to its commanding lead. Wilson hit consecutive three-pointers in the final five minutes to round out the night
The Dolphins close the week on Friday against Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. at 6:30 p.m. Fans can follow the action by clicking the live links on JUDolphins.com.
