Women’s hoops hosts rival UNF in regular-season finale Saturday
The Atlantic Sun schedule will end where it began when the JU women’s basketball team faces cross-town rival North Florida for Senior Day at 1 p.m. Saturday in Swisher Gymnasium.
The Dolphins (10-18, 8-9 A-Sun), winners of three of the last four contests, will honor seniors Crystal Bell, Jessica George and Ashanti Williams in a special pregame ceremony.
The game will also be another installment for the year-long SunTrust River City Rumble battle between the two schools. UNF holds a 6-3 advantage entering Friday’s men’s basketball contest at the arena.
“Every game is a big game,” JU head coach Jill Dunn said. “The fact that it is our last conference game and our senior day puts even more emphasis on this game. We want our seniors that are playing at Swisher for the last time to be sent out on a winning note.”
Last time out, the Dolphins had four players in double-figures for an 84-78 victory against Mercer in their final game at the Veterans Memorial Arena on Feb. 18.
Bell recorded 19 points, nine boards and five steals to lead the cause. Sophomore Abril Peeples had 17 points and six assists, while junior Tracie Sneed recorded a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds). Sophomore Jade Cargill rounded out the group with 14 points.
In the A-Sun standings, Bell continues to shine after ranking first in steals (80), fifth in scoring (13.6), and sixth in rebounds (7.2). Cargill is third in rebounds (8.2) and fifth in steals (57).
Sneed enters the weekend for the Dolphins 13 free throw shy of the JU single-season record. Bell is already the single-season leader in steals, while Cargill is fifth on that list.
Like the Dolphins, the Ospreys (12-16, 9-8) have earned wins in three of the last four contests. The Ospreys beat Kennesaw State, 64-56, last Saturday at UNF Arena. Brittany Kirkland paced UNF with 23 points, while Larkira Jones had 13 boards.
Kirkland leads the Ospreys in scoring (12.4) and assists (102), while ranking second in steals (34). The next highest scorer is Jadken Kerr at 8.6 points a contest. Jones had a 7.4 rebounding average to lead the Ospreys.
In the first meeting, the Ospreys earned a 51-36 victory at UNF Arena on Dec. 3 to start A-Sun play. The Dolphins still had a slight 9-6 edge in the all-time series. UNF won last season’s matchup at JU, 55-49.
