Women’s hoops starts first A-Sun road trip Saturday
The Jacksonville University women’s basketball team looks to continue its good start in league play when they take on the last two A-Sun champions beginning Saturday in Fort Myers, Fla.
The Dolphins (6-7, 2-0 A-Sun) start their first conference road trip against defending champion Florida Gulf Coast at 4:15 p.m. JU finishes with 2011 champion and conference leader, Stetson, Monday in DeLand, Fla., at 3 p.m.
“This will be a very tough weekend for us,” JU head coach Jill Dunn said. “We are playing two of the top teams in our conference. We will need to execute on a high level if we want to be successful.”
On Jan. 3, the Dolphins moved to 2-0 in league play for the second straight season with a 58-45 win against Lipscomb at home. JU had four players score in double-figures, including double-double efforts from senior Tracie Sneed and freshman Queen Alford.
Both Sneed and Alford have been hot for the Dolphins through the last few contests. Sneed is averaging 17.0 points and 8.8 rebounds in the last five games. She has hit 10 of 18 three-pointers and is 23-for-26 (.885) from the free-throw line to help her cause.
Alford has scored double-digits in six of the last seven contests she has played. She also has had at least eight rebounds in five of the games.
The Eagles (9-5, 2-0) defeated Mercer on the same night, 70-41, in Macon, Ga. for their fifth win in the last six games (third in a row). Betsy Adams scored 20 off the bench, while Sarah Hansen (11 pts., 10 rebs.) and Brittany Kennedy (10 pts., 11 rebs.) each had double-doubles.
Hansen (17.1), Kennedy (10.1) and Joyce Iamstrong (10.0) are each averaging more than 10 points a contest to lead the FGCU offense. Hansen is also first in rebounds (8.0) and blocks (12).
FGCU has won the last nine contests against JU since falling to the Dolphins in the first meeting on Jan. 5, 2008. The Dolphins suffered a 10-point loss, 70-60, in the final meeting last season in Jacksonville.
The Hatters (9-4, 2-0), who play North Florida Saturday, earned a 57-52 victory against Kennesaw State for their fifth straight win Monday night.
Victoria McGowan scored a season-best 33 points to move her team and A-Sun leading scoring average to 18.4 points a game. She also paces the Hatters in rebounding (6.9) and assists (51), while ranking second in steals at 24.
Stetson has won the last five contests against JU for a 17-13 all-time series lead. The Hatters won three games against the Dolphins last season, including a 93-86 double-overtime contest in DeLand. JU’s last win was a 76-61 victory at home on Dec. 2, 2010.
