The Jacksonville University women’s basketball team will make a short trip across the city Saturday to play rival North Florida in UNF Arena at 2 p.m.

The Dolphins (7-10, 3-3) start three-game A-Sun road swing with the Ospreys (7-10, 3-3) who downed JU with a buzzer beater last season in Swisher on Senior Day. The matchup will also count towards the annual SunTrust River City Rumble standings between the two schools.

“We are excited about this matchup,” JU head coach Jill Dunn said. “It is always fun to play the cross town rival. Both teams know it will be a big game.”

Last time out, the Dolphins (7-10, 3-3) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 64-52 victory against Kennesaw State Monday in Swisher Gymnasium. The Dolphins shot better than 40 percent from the floor in the second half to second the half. They also held the Owls to no three-pointers in seven attempts after they hit five in the first half.

Junior Jade Cargill recorded 16 points and nine boards for JU in the win, while freshman Briona Brown had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Brown was named A-Sun Newcomer of the Week the next day for the second time this season. She scored 15 points against Mercer (1/12) to help solidly the honor.

Brown is currently the highest scoring freshman in the A-Sun with a 10.5 average. She is second on the team in rebounds (6.0) and steals (22), while her 19 blocks is first on the squad and fourth in the league.

The Ospreys (7-10, 3-3) suffered their third loss in the last four games Monday when they fell to Mercer, 53-46. Destinee Smith scored 10 points to lead the UNF offense.

Jadhken Kerr (7.9) and Ki Conner (7.8) each pace the Ospreys in scoring, while Raneisha Lamar has a team-best 6.7 rebounding average. Fabiola Josil has 30 steals to rank first on the squad.

Despite a 9-7 series advantage, the Dolphins have lost six of the last seven games to their cross-town rival. North Florida has swept the season series in each of the last two years, while the Dolphins last beat the Ospreys, 56-52, in the first round of the 2011 A-Sun Tournament. JU’s last regular season win was an overtime victory, 64-58, at home on Jan. 18, 2010.
