JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A new era for Jacksonville University women’s basketball officially hits the hardwood this season. First-year head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin has the Dolphins primed for a 29-game 2013-14 regular season schedule highlighted by four in-state contests plus road trips to Alabama and Texas.
The Dolphins will begin play on Nov. 8 at Florida A&M while also traveling in-state foes USF (Nov. 13), Florida State (Dec. 8) and Bethune-Cookman (Dec. 15). The non-league schedules features to the first ever trip to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to face the Crimson Tide on Dec. 17 and a trip to Texas Dec. 20-22 for the Basketball Travelers Invitational hosted by Texas Tech. In addition to facing the Lady Raiders, Jacksonville will square off against Abilene Christian and Florida Atlantic in Lubbock.
The non-league home schedule includes contests against Georgia Southern (Nov. 24) and Tennessee State (Dec. 4) as well as an in-season exhibition against Edward Waters (Nov. 20).
With eight of the 11 non-conference games away from home, Jacksonville will be road tested when Atlantic Sun Conference play starts in January with the two-game Georgia loop at Kennesaw State (Jan. 2) and at Mercer (Jan. 4). Rhe annual SunTrust River City Rumble showdown with North Florida (Jan. 11) will then kick off a three-game homestand and is the beginning of a seven-game stretch which features five home contests.
The Dolphins are then on the road for five the nine games during the second half of league play which gets underway at North Florida on Feb. 8.
The importance of the A-Sun regular season holds even more weight this year as the conference has revamped its tournament format for the 2014 edition of the General Shale A-Sun Basketball Championships.
After six years of playing the entire tournament at one pre-determined site, the conference is now taking its sessions across the membership. Regular season play will determine the higher seed hosts for the opening round of the tournament, with the top four seeds hosting quarterfinal games on March 11. The highest remaining seed will then host both the semifinals (Mar. 15) and championship game (Mar. 16).
