Women’s cross country picked fourth in A-Sun Preseason Poll
With the 2008 season a week away, the JU women’s cross country team was picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic Sun preseason coaches’ poll on Friday.

Belmont, the 2007 champion, took the top spot with 116 points and six first-place votes, while Kennesaw State (110 points, four first-place votes) followed in second. North Florida (94), JU (91, including the final first-place vote) and Lipscomb (76) rounded out the top five. Campbell, Mercer, East Tennessee State, Florida Gulf Coast, USC Upstate and Stetson make up the rest of the poll.

“I think there are probably four or five teams that can have legitimate aspirations for winning the team title, and I feel we are certainly one of them,” said JU head coach Ron Grigg. “Many variables will play out through the season and we will see who has the healthiest group on November 1.”

JU return five runners for the 2008 season, led by sophomore Anastasia Fokina. Fokina finished in 10th place (19:09) at the A-Sun Championships last season to earn all-conference and all-freshman accolades, while also ranking 79th with a time of 23:38.94 in the NCAA regionals.

The Dolphins open the 2008 season on Friday, Aug. 29 for the JU Short Duals at the JU golf course.
