Cross country open 2009 season with JU short course duals on Friday
The JU women’s and men’s cross country teams look to get off on the right path when they open the 2009 season on Friday with the JU Short Course Duals on campus.
The women kick things off at 5:30 p.m. with a two-mile run, while the men follow at 5:55 p.m. with a 5K race. The Dolphins are one of five teams in the meet, which includes Stetson, North Florida, Bethune-Cookman and Savannah State.
“We are excited to get the season started,” said JU head coach Ron Grigg. “Our men’s team will have six new athletes competing for the first time. While we will be resting five of the top six women from last week’s time trial, I expect that the five who are competing will show the depth of our team.”
The JU women’s squad, which was picked second in the first Atlantic Sun coaches poll, brings back seven runners from last year’s squad which produced the best season in school history.
In 2008, the Dolphins won four of five regular season meets while producing program-best finishes in the A-Sun Championship (2nd) and the NCAA South Regional (10th).
The men’s team will look for a much improved season over the 2008 campaign. The Dolphins bring back senior Clay Garrett, who was the top finisher in three out of four meets last year.
