The JU women’s cross country team is still garnering plenty of attention as the Dolphins were ranked 11th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association south region preseason poll on Tuesday afternoon.

The Dolphins, who earned a No. 9 ranking in the polls during the 2008 season, were ranked ahead of reigning Atlantic Sun conference champion Belmont, who was tabbed 14th.

“Preseason recognition is always nice,” said JU head coach Ron Grigg. “The rankings will be sorted out when the real racing begins and it will ultimately be decided in November at the regional meet. We are very happy with the makeup of our team and we are excited to get everyone racing this Friday.”

The Dolphins opened the 2009 season by winning the JU Short Course Duals on Sept. 4 for the second year in a row.

Junior Elsabeth Goshu (12:39.87), freshman Amaila Vogler (12:59.15) and junior Kelli Midden (13:15.17) took the top three spots in order to help the team to a perfect 4-0 mark. The Dolphins finished ahead of Stetson (3-1), North Florida (2-2), Savannah State (1-3) and Bethune Cookman (0-4).

With the duals victory, the Dolphins have won five of their last six regular-season meets.

The Dolphins return to action on Friday for the UF Mountain Dew Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
