Women’s cross country finishes fourth at UF Mountain Dew Invitational
The JU women’s cross country team continues to run well as the Dolphins placed fourth at the UF Mountain Dew Invitational on Friday night in Gainesville, Fla.
The Dolphins, who battled humid temperatures into the 80’s, tallied 125 points to finish ahead of all in-state conference rivals - UNF (6th), Florida Gulf Coast (9th) and Stetson (20th).
With the fourth-place finish, the Dolphins have made it into the top five in six of their last seven regular season meets dating back to last season.
“It was a fine effort for our first real race of the season,” said JU head coach Ron Grigg. “It was nothing exceptional, nothing terrible. We may have been more conservative than we needed to be early in the race. Overall, we are still in a very good position for the rest of the season.”
Senior Elsabeth Goshu paced the Dolphins after placing 16th with a time of 18:39.51. Junior Susanne Klungtveit took 25th (18:52.24) in her first meet of the season, while junior Anastasia Fokina ran a time of 19:04.68 to finish 29th. Senior Ali Ritter (19:15.21) and freshman Joane Pierre (19:15.29) finished within six hundredths of second of each other at 32nd and 33rd, respectively.
Junior Kelli Midden took 55th with a time of 20:00.71, while senior Tiffanie Saxton (20:57.68) and freshman Morgan Keel (21:10.64) rounded out the rest of the Dolphins.
On the men’s side, junior Andrew Maedel took 52nd with a time of 27:18.30 as the Dolphins’ lone representative.
“This was a good effort for Andrew in his first 8K race,” said Grigg. “He was really solid through the first three miles. With more meets, he will continue to improve as the season moves along.”
Both JU cross country teams will back in action on Friday, Oct.2, when they travel to Titusville, Fla. for the FLrunners.com Invitational.
