Sophomore Joane Pierre earned Atlantic Sun Conference “Runner of the Week” honors after winning the UF Mountain Dew Invitational with a new school record 5K time and leading the JU women’s cross country team to a second place overall finish on Sept. 18.

Pierre averaged a 5:39.1 mark per mile to finish with a time of 17:33.50 and leg out Florida’s Genevieve LaCaze (17:36.61) for the top spot in the meet. Pierre’s mark broke the previous 5K record held by Allison Wilfong who ran a 17:49 on Oct. 16, 1993 in Tampa, Fla.

The Dolphins’ finish also surpassed the previous program-best fourth place marks in 2008 and 2009.

“Joane had a phenomenal run this past weekend,” said JU head coach Ron Grigg. “She is still learning how good she can be and it is fun watching her grow.”

This is the first weekly cross country accolade for Pierre and the first for a Dolphin since Elsa Goshu received the honor on Sept. 24, 2008.

Pierre and the Dolphins race again on Oct. 1 at the Invitational in Titusville, Fla.
