Women’s cross country races in UF Mountain Dew Invitational on Saturday
The JU women cross country team will return to action on Saturday with the UF Mountain Dew Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
“We will make our first attempt at the 5k distance at UF on Saturday which marks the midway point between the start of the year and the conference championship,” JU head coach Ron Grigg said. “It will be a good assessment of our training over the first half of the season.”
The Dolphins return to action for the first time since winning the JU short course duals on Sept. 2.
JU had eight of top nine finishers to record a 3-0 mark and win the meet for the third time in the last four years.
Freshman Sarah Bailey finished first overall in her first collegiate meet. Sophomore Svenja Meyer and junior Joane Pierre finished second and third, respectively.
B-CU’s Kadian Dunkley took fourth place though the Dolphins took the next five places with junior Morgan Keel, senior Bailee Hedstrom, junior Amalia Vogler, junior Bienna Freeman and junior Alicia Gard-Kaminkow.
Following the win, the Dolphins have been ranked 12th in the last two U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association south region polls.
At the 2010 race, Pierre broke a 17-year school record to win the individual portion at the UF Mountain Dew Invitational and help lead the Dolphins to a program-best second place finish.
Pierre averaged a 5:39.1 mark per mile to finish with a time of 17:33.50 and break the previous record held by Allison Wilfong who ran a 17:49 on Oct. 16, 1993 in Tampa, Fla.
