Women's golf in fifth after round one of A-Sun Championship
April 9, 2007
BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Therese Karlsson's two-over par 74 led the Jacksonville women's golf team in cold conditions to fifth place after round one of the 2007 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship on the par-72 Keith Hills Country Club.
Tournament host Campbell leads the eight-team event after an eight-over par, 296. Campbell's Alejandra Shaw and Mercer's Monica Kelsey carded rounds of one-over par, 73, to lead the individual competition.
"Therese shot a great round today, which saved us," said JU head coach Jim Taketa. "I'm happy with where we are at heading into the final two rounds, especially knowing that we were with the leaders at the turn shows that we can play with them."
Karlsson opened the round with five straight pars before a bogey at the sixth. She answered with a birdie at the eighth to get back to even par at the turn.
After a bogey on the 10th, Karlssson rallied with a birdie on No. 12 to get back to even again. She weathered a rough stretch of three straight bogeys from 13 through 15 by finishing with a birdie on 16 to post a 74.
Jessica Green posted a 78 for JU to finish in a tie for 16th. She opened with a three-over par front nine, including a birdie at the sixth. She finished with just three bogeys on the inward nine to finish at six-over par.
Heather Fudge had an eight-over par 80 to finish in a tie for 22nd. Fudge had two birdies on the round, but a double bogey on the 17th was the only major blemish on a four-over par back nine.
Camilla Loeveid shot an 81 to finish in a tie for 28th. She was five-over at the turn and struggled late, with bogeys on four of the final five holes.
Alexandra Andersen birdied the first, but struggled coming in to shoot an 84 - tying for 32nd. She had five straight bogeys on the front nine and bogeyed three of the final four to finish at 12-over par.
The Dolphins will tee off at 8:45 on Tuesday morning with East Tennessee State and Belmont.
