March 3, 2008
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Freshman Danielle Gibb fired a one-over par 73 to lead the JU women's golf team to a tie for fourth after the first round of the Diet Coke Wofford Invitational.
Gibb's round broke her season best and gave her a two-shot lead heading into the final round, that began later on Monday due to possible inclement weather on Tuesday. Gibb's closest pursuer is Samantha Widmer of Elon with six others trailing by three.
The Dolphins finished the first round tied for fourth with James Madison at 322. Elon leads the team event by nine shots after posting a 307.
"Danielle played really well today and was able to get some putts to fall," said JU assistant women's coach Pamela Shelley. "With the potential for the weather to come into play tomorrow, it was good to see her take advantage of the scoring conditions today."
Jessica Green was the only other Dolphin to finish in the top 20 individually, carding a six-over par 78 to sit in a tie for 11th.
Alexandra Andersen and Therese Karlsson rounded out the team score, with Andersen shooting an 85 and Karlsson carding an 86. Andersen is tied for 33rd and Karlsson is tied for 37th individually.
Heather Fudge shot an 89 in the opening round and is tied for 47th.
The Dolphins will wrap up their final round on Tuesday morning, starting at 8:30 a.m.
