Jessica Welch Earns Two Year-End Atlantic Sun Honors
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Finishing strong down the closing stretch of the season, junior women’s golfer Jessica Welch was named to the All-Atlantic Sun First Team on Wednesday, building on her All-Atlantic Sun Second Team award from her sophomore season.
An exercise science major with a 3.73 GPA, Welch was also named to the Academic All-Conference team for the first time in her career.
“I'm very proud of Jessica and her latest awards,” said Head Coach Jen Borocz. “She has worked tirelessly both on and off the golf course. It's exciting to be able to work with a player of her caliber and see her develop into the player that she is. I look forward to coaching her next year during her senior year.”
After competing in four tournaments in the fall for Jacksonville with a best finish of a tie for 14th at the JU Classic, Welch began the spring with back-to-back rounds of even-par 72 to place in a tie for seventh at the Amelia Island Collegiate. She then ended in a tie for 12th at the UNF Intercollegiate and in a tie for 11th at the Pinehurst Challenge before catching fire at the Cincinnati Spring Invitational. Closing out the tournament with a 2-under 70 and a 6-under 66 – the best round in school history – Welch claimed her first medalist honors by five strokes.
The build-up to the Atlantic Sun Championship came at the Web.com Intercollegiate at Marsh Landing Country Club, where Welch ended in a tie for 25th competing against a loaded field. Last week at the A-Sun Championship at Pine Lakes Golf Course, she began the tournament with a one-under 71 to sit in a tie for first after the first day. Her second round ended up split over two days due to rain and she fell back into a tie for seventh, but recovered in the afternoon with a one-over 73 to end the tournament alone in second and grab one of the spots on the All-Tournament Team.
With Welch leading the way, Jacksonville ended the A-Sun Championship in a tie for fourth place and looks to build off that finish next season as all five golfers from that weekend are set to return. In addition, JU will have a talented new set of recruits adding depth to the lineup. A full listing of the next wave of Dolphins as well as the 2014-15 schedule will come out this summer.
