Women’s lacrosse rolls past Howard for 22-6 conference win
The JU women’s lacrosse team took a commanding 14-goal halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way for a 22-6 victory over Howard in a National Lacrosse Conference game on Saturday afternoon at Greene Stadium in Washington, D.C.
Amanda Hurley scored four goals and Jen Cosgrove tallied a hat trick as the Dolphins won for the seventh straight time in improving to 11-4 and 6-0 in conference play. JU can clinch a perfect NLC regular season if it can defeat Presbyterian in the finale. Howard fell to 3-10 and 0-6.
The Dolphins won back-to-back road games on consecutive days after defeating Detroit, 22-3, in the Motor City on Friday. JU out-scored the pair, 44-9, in moving to 2-1 in road games.
“I’m pleased with the way our team gave complete efforts in both games on this road trip,” JU head coach Mindy McCord said. “To be on the precipice of an undefeated NLC regular season is very exciting and we’re hoping to sustain this momentum into the Presbyterian game and into the conference tournament.”
Hurley registered her fifth multi-goal game this season and third in the past four games. Cosgrove continued her hot streak, following a four-goal effort at Detroit by scoring three first-half goals, giving her seven goals on just 10 shots on the road trip.
JU surged to an 8-0 lead 13:23 in. Hurley racked up all three goals in that stretch with Cosgrove, Nicole Albino, Abigail Warnken, Melissa and Rachael Krell also contributing scoring strikes. Krell netted two goals total.
Cynthia Smalls scored an unassisted goal at 16:04 for Howard’s lone goal of the half. After the Bison got on the scoreboard, JU scored the next nine goals for a 17-1 lead with 24:14 left in the second half.
The Dolphins built a 39-16 edge in shots and a 21-9 advantage in draw controls. Thirteen JU players scored at least one goal and nine finished with multi-point games.
In six NLC games, the Dolphins have out-scored opponents, 115-42. JU has reached the 20-goal plateau four times this season.
The Dolphins will face Presbyterian next Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. start time at Clinton, S.C.
