Freshman Holly Ventimiglia scored three goals and four teammates added two apiece as JU cruised past Detroit, 20-5, in the National Lacrosse Conference opener for both teams Tuesday.

For Ventimiglia, from Medford, N.Y., it was the second consecutive game she has recorded a hat trick as she scored three times against Siena Sunday.

“I’m just executing my shots right now,’’ the midfielder, who also had a pair of assists, said.

She had plenty of help along the way as the Dolphins (2-1, 1-0) built a 13-3 halftime lead.

Midfielders Ellyn Spangenberg, Chelsea Watts and Abby Warnken along with defenseman Kayleigh Hynes all scored a pair of goals.

Senior Jess Hotchkiss led the JU defense as she had four ground balls, netted four draw controls and caused two turnovers.

With Ventimiglia putting in two of her goals in the first 3:34, the Dolphins built a 5-0 lead before Detroit’s (0-2, 0-1) Corina Mahorn scored. She led the Titans with two goals.

JU plays host to St. Joseph’s Sunday as part of a triple header at D.B. Milne Field. The women play at 12:30 p.m. which follows a men’s game between Michigan and Mercer at 10 a.m. The JU men will play at 3:30 against Holy Cross.
