GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women’s lacrosse team struck first, but not often as they fell on the road to No. 4 Florida by a score of 21-5 on Wednesday evening. Sophomore midfielder Kelsey Wiglesworth led the attack for JU with a pair of goals.

“We have a lot of work to do this season,” said Head Coach Mindy McCord. “Right now we go back to the drawing board. Our young players that got in played well and we will continue to build on that.”

Freshman midfielder Hannah Wilcox, junior midfielder Holly Ventimiglia and freshman attack Danielle Della Rocca also recorded a goal in the contest while senior attack Morgan Derner dished two assists. Junior goalkeeper Asia Moore returned in the net and recorded 10 saves.

Junior midfielder Shannon Gilroy led the Gators with a career-high-tying seven goals. Devon Schneider (4), Sam Darcangelo (3), Mollie Stevens (3) and Sammi Burgess (2) also contributed scorers.

The Dolphins grabbed the first draw control and immediately scored on a goal from Wiglesworth but the lead wasn’t held long as the Gators fired in a free-position goal to tie the game at 1-1 with 26:58 remaining in the half. JU then gave up six consecutive goals over the next seven minutes until Ventimiglia ended the run with a free-position goal, 7-2, at 17:05.

Wiglesworth knocked in her second goal of the game with 32 seconds left in the half as the Fins entered the locker room trailing the Gators, 14-3.

Jacksonville's defense was able to contain Florida better in the second half. While the Dolphins were able to put two more on the scoreboard it wasn’t enough as they fell 21-5.

The Gators outshot JU 34-12 and controlled 20 of the 28 draws.

In the loss, JU falls to 0-2 while Florida picks up its first win of the season to improve to 1-1.

The Dolphins return home to D.B. Milne on Saturday, Feb. 15 as they host Colorado at 12 p.m.
