Dolphins Meet JMU at D.B. Milne on Saturday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women’s lacrosse team is going for two W’s in a row as they host James Madison at D.B. Milne on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 10:30 a.m.

“It was a good first win and great to see strong offensive production,” said Head Coach Mindy McCord. “We are working on improving the process each game. We need to play at a higher level; we have the potential but we have to work on it. We are working hard to be a great team at the end of the season. Our team needs to focus on competing for 60 minutes.”

Eight different Dolphins scored in the 20-13 bout against Colorado last Saturday. The Buffaloes tested JU early, holding a slight 3-2 advantage at one point, but the Dolphins’ quick attack built a 10-6 lead at the break.

The teams traded 2-0 and 3-0 runs to close the game but JU never relinquished its lead.

Jacksonville outshot Colorado 41 to 24 and grabbed twice as many ground balls (30 to CU’s 15).

For the second time this season, JU swept the weekly Atlantic Sun honors with Kelsey Wiglesworth earning her second Offensive Player of the Week award and junior goalkeeper Asia Moore netting Defensive Player of the Week.

In games against the Buffs and Florida, Moore recorded 19 saves with a 37.3 save percentage. Her success over Colorado marked her first collegiate win.

Against Colorado, sophomore Wiglesworth posted another multi-score game with two goals to go alongside two assists. She also led JU’s defensive efforts with six draw controls. Leading the attack in the 21-5 loss to Florida, she notched a pair of goals.

Road tripping for a two-game southern swing, the Dukes fell to Florida, 21-8, on Thursday night to drop to 1-1 on the season. JMU kicked off 2014 with a 14-11 victory over Virginia Tech. Stephanie Finley and Ali Curwin lead the team with six goals. They also tag in three and two assists, respectively. Finley (9) and teammate Kaci Starkloff (10) record the most draw controls for the Dukes while Jaci Gordon and Lexi Cross are snatching six groundballs each.

Jacksonville prepares for a showdown against Old Dominion next Saturday, March 1 for an 11 a.m. contest.
