During his tenure as the volunteer assistant, the women's Varsity 8 made the petite finals at the prestigious Dad Vails, the first time a JU women's eight-person boat made that final in over a decade. In the 2012 season, the JU women took third place in their first-ever Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship regatta.
Prior to JU, Peterson was a girls crew coach for Holy Spirit High School in New Jersey (2007) and helped lead the program to numerous national, state and county championships. Along with the titles, many of his student-athletes went on to earn scholarships at major colleges across the country.
Before the girls' squad, he was a varsity assistant coach with for the Holy Spirit boys' crew team which won state, Stotesbury and scholastic national medals in 2006.
Peterson graduated from Holy Spirit and lettered in basketball, crew and track and attended Quincy University (Quincy, Ill.) and participated in basketball.
His coaching career began immediately out of college when he returned to Holy Spirit to coach both crew and basketball. He also was involved in numerous rowing programs on the Jersey Shore.
Peterson, who also worked as a contractor for 34 years, lives in St. Augustine with his wife Cindy. He also has two children, Michael and Alexa, each of whom has their own collection of rowing championship medals.
