Women's Rowing Competing in FIRA Championships

SARASOTA, Fla. – This weekend the Jacksonville University women’s rowing program will join some of the best collegiate rowers in the Florida as they compete in the two-day FIRA State Rowing Championships.

“We have seen a lot of progress in our training over the last month, and we are looking forward to see how it translates into racing,” said Head Coach Jim Mitchell. “We have some tough competition, including the No. 1 ranked Div. II National Champions, Nova Southeastern. Each boat will need to be ready for prime racing this weekend.”

“Last year, our women’s team contributed to the overall point trophy, but came up short for the women’s point trophy. We will be going for both this year.”

Competing in last year’s FIRA’s, the women’s team had a strong showing with the Freshman Four finishing in the top spot with a time of 8:54.8 and the Freshman Eight crossing second in their race at 7:53.5.

Friday’s qualifying is set to start at 3 p.m. with the finals starting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. The women’s Freshman Four will kick off racing for JU in a 3:40 heat against Georgia Tech, Rollins, Florida and Tampa.

At the end of the month, the women will trek north to New Jersey to row in the MAAC Championships. Racing is scheduled for April 26.
