September 30, 1999

Jacksonville, Fla. - The Jacksonville University (4-4, 2-1) women's soccer team handed Samford University (8-2-1, 2-1-1) only their second loss of the season, and first in conference, with a 3-1 victory over the Bulldogs Thursday evening at the Ashley Sports Complex.

Jacksonville junior Stine Kloster (6) opened the scoring at 12:56 when she converted a pass from classmate Marit Foss to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead. Senior Sara Robertson (1) picked up the second assist on the play. Less than three minutes later, Samford appeared to even the game at one when a corner beat the Jacksonville goalkeeper, but the ball was cleared off the line by a Jacksonville defender to preserve the Dolphin lead.

The score remained unchanged until the 20:09 mark when Samford junior Mitzi Mahan got behind the Dolphin defense, off a pass from sophomore Anne Whitehead, and beat the JU goalkeeper for her team-leading sixth goal of the year. Both teams had numerous chances throughout the rest of the first-half, but neither team could convert.

After battling to a first-half tie at 1-1, the Dolphins took the lead for good just 3:21 into the second session on a goal by sophomore Trine Riis Groven. Kloster and Foss (8) picked up assists on the goal. Jacksonville put the game away when Groven scored her second goal of the game, and fifth of the season, for the Dolphins at 70:18, burying a header off a pass from Kloster (6).

Freshman Kristen Kirsch picked up the victory in goal for the Dolphins, posting three saves, while Samford goalkeeper Carrie Ollom picked up four saves in the loss.

The Dolphins will return to action on Saturday, October 2nd when they host Jacksonville State in a crucial Trans America Athletic Conference match at 1:00 P.M.
