Jacksonville Defeats FAU In Key TAAC Match

October 16, 1999

Jacksonville, Fla. - Jacksonville University (7-6, 4-2) built a two goal lead and held on to defeat Florida Atlantic (2-6-1, 2-3-1) by the score of 2-1 in women's soccer action here Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Dolphins took over sole possession of third place in the Trans America Athletic Conference with three league matches to be played.

Sophomore Trine Riis Groven opened the scoring for the Dolphins at the 16:21 mark when she headed home a cross from junior Dianne Scott. Jacksonville was unable to capitalize on several opportunities over the next 25 minutes of play, until junior Marit Foss beat the Owls' goalkeeper from approximately 30 yards out with only 1:04 left in the half. Groven picked up the assist on Foss' goal.

Leading 2-0 throughout most of the second half, the Dolphins again missed several chances to put the game away, eventually out-shooting FAU by a 21 to seven margin. The Owls took advantage of Jacksonville's inability to close the door at the 86:34 mark on a goal of a set-piece. Standing over a free-kick from just over 40 yards out, junior Tracey Drost played a bending ball into the JU goal area, and senior Tara O'Brien headed it past the Dolphins' goalkeeper. The final four minutes of action was back-and-forth as FAU's comeback bid fell just short.

Jacksonville freshman goalkeeper Kristen Kirsch made two big plays in the second half for the Dolphins, posting two saves in the match and allowing JU to preserve the victory. Senior Tabitha Price made five saves for the Owls.

The Dolphins will return to action at the Ashley Sports Complex on Monday, October 18th at 3:00 when they host non-conference East Carolina (8-2) in their final home match of the season.
