JU Finishes Last Minute Chance To Defeat Jacksonville State University
October 2, 1999
Jacksonville, Fla. - Dianne Scott of Jacksonville University (5-4, 3-1) redirected a Caroline Owen long ball cross into the side netting to clinch a last minute goal and victory over the Jacksonville State University Gamecocks (8-3-2, 3-2-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Ashley Sports Complex.
The Gamecocks opened the scoring early in the first half when a miscommunication between Dolphin goalkeeper, Kristen Kirsch, and one of the JU defenders enabled the Gamecocks' Emily Hulburt to tap a headball over the goal line just shy of the ten minute mark. The Gamecocks retained the lead until right before the halftime buzzer when Stine Kloster accelerated away from two defenders to possess and finish a free kick floater from Brooke Aid, beating Gamecock keeper Adriana Finelli one versus one.
The second half provided action mostly in the middle third of the field with few scoring opportunities, neither keeper facing many challenges. Fouls peppered the match, and restarts provided the few second half chances for each team. The Gamecocks rarely penetrated the JU defense, while the Dolphins pounded keeper, Finelli, with several long range shots and two solid headball attempts by JU forward Trine Riis Groven. Finelli finished with six save, and JU's Kirsch played solidly for the remainder of the match, posting two saves on only three Gamecock shots.
The game-winning goal came in the 90th minute when Dianne Scott made a diagonal run to meet Caroline Owen's long cross to touch the ball past two sprawling Gamecocks to clinch the 2-1 win over a strong and aggressive Jacksonville State University squad. The hard-fought victory puts the Dolphins in good standing in the TAAC, improving their conference record to 3-1. The Gamecocks fall to 3-2-1 in the TAAC and 8-3-1 overall with this afternoon's loss.
The Dolphins will return to action on Wednesday, October 6th, when they host Florida State in a midweek battle at 1:00 p.m. at Jacksonville University's Ashley Sports Complex.
