Women's Soccer Tops Atlantic Sun Preseason Poll

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU was picked as the favorite to win the 2001 Atlantic Sun women's soccer championship today in a voting by the league's head coaches. The Dolphins received six of a possible 11 first-place votes.

JU returns seven starters from last year's record-breaking squad, which captured both the Atlantic Sun regular-season and tournament championships. The Dolphins finished with a 19-3 overall record and a perfect 9-0 mark in conference play en route to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

Perennial conference power UCF (six-time conference champion) is picked to finish second while Florida Atlantic, which lost 2-1 in last season's conference championship match to JU, is slated to finish third.

The top six regular season finishers will advance to the 2001 Atlantic Sun Women's Soccer Championship which will be held on November 8-10 in Orlando, Fla., on UCF'S campus. The winner will earn the Atlantic Sun's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

The Dolphins open the season in an exhibition game against Big East power Miami, on Saturday, August 25 at 1:00 p.m. The Dolphins then host ninth ranked Stanford on Monday, August 27 at 5:30.
