JU Women's Soccer Falls To Miami, 4-1 In Exhibition

Aug. 25, 2001

Miami forward Allison McWhinney scored three goals, including two in the second half, and forward Gitana Gotay chipped in another score to lead the Miami Hurricanes past Jacksonville, 4-1, in an exhibition women's soccer match Saturday afternoon at the Ashley Sports Complex.

JU's lone goal came when senior defender Yvonna Rowinski's (Los Angeles, Calif.) header found the back of the net from a Dianne Herlihy (Key West, Fla.) corner kick in the 53rd minute.

JU freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Fowler (Seffner, Fla) had a game-high 13 saves in her collegiate debut as the Hurricanes outshot the Dolphins, 24-6.

Miami got on the board midway through the first half when McWhinney scored on a putback from a Fowler deflection. She then added her second score in the 49th minute on an assist from midfielder Britney Butcher. After the Dolphins scored to cut the lead to 2-1, McWhinney completed the hat trick with a one-on-one shot past Fowler. Gotay capped Miami's scoring in the 79th minute sticking a backdoor feed from Laura West inside the left post.

The Dolphins return to action Monday, Aug. 27 at 5:30 p.m., when they take on No. 9 Stanford, at the Ashley Sports Complex on the JU campus.
