Callie Withers' goal from 45 feet out in the 64th minute was all No. 9 Stanford needed as The Cardinal defeated Jacksonville, 1-0, in a defensive battle Monday evening in JU's final women's soccer exhibition match at Ashley Sports Complex. JU freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Fowler (Seffner, Fla.) stood out for the second straight match making eight saves on Stanford's 25 shots.

Dolphin head coach Mike Johnson was satisfied with JU's early season performance, as the Dolphins entered the contest without the services of four starters. "I was very proud of the effort the girls gave today. We put ourselves in position to win the game and that's all I can ask for at this point. It will be a good momentum builder as we head into the regular season," said Johnson.

JU's defense held the Cardinal scoreless in the first half and majority of the second half despite four Stanford shots that deflected off the side posts and crossbar. Stanford got on the board when Withers' blast from the left side found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The Dolphin's had several scoring attempts, as the JU defense was able to keep them in the game.

The Dolphins open the regular season on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7:00 p.m., at South Alabama in the adidas/Port City Classic in Mobile, Ala.
