JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU Senior defender Yvonna Rowinski's (Los Angeles, Calif.) header in the 99th minute off a Vanessa Illanes (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) corner kick gave the Dolphins (2-1) a 3-2 overtime win over the High Point Panthers (0-2) in the Brine/Dennis Viollet Memorial Classic.
JU's offensive attack got things going early as freshman forward Michaelene Cadiz (Lutz, Fla.) outran the High Point goalie to a loose ball to score her first-ever collegiate goal, putting the Dolphins 1-0 in the 12th minute of the match. JU went up 2-0 in the 24th minute as Illanes took a pass from junior midfielder Kristen Holstrom (Anaheim, Calif.) and sent it high into the back of the net.
High Point fought back, cutting the lead to 2-1 in the 34th minute as Carolyn Bader rebounded a deflection shoot it past the outstretched arms of Dolphin goalie Stephanie Fowler (Seffner, Fla.). The Panthers Beth Mork scored the equalizer in the 73rd minute, sticking a shot into the back corner.
The Dolphins attacked the Panthers in the overtime period, ending the game with a sudden death goal as Illanes' corner kick found Rowinski's head to give JU the 3-2 win.
In the first game of the afternoon, South Florida (2-1) got two goals each from Stine Hagh and Jamie Bombinski and Rachel Thjomoe tallied three assists, as the Bulls beat The Citadel (1-1) 7-1.
The Brine/ Dennis Viollet Memorial Classic continues on Sunday afternoon, as South Florida plays High Point at Noon, followed by JU against The Citadel at 2 p.m.
