Mercer's Anna Bengtsson scored the second of her two goals in the 82nd minute, to edge the Dolphins, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in Atlantic Sun conference play. The loss drops the Dolphins to 4-2, and evens their Atlantic Sun conference record to 1-1. Mercer improves to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the A-Sun.
Mercer got on the board early, scoring in just the fourth minute of the match, behind Bengtsson's first goal. The Dolphins answered quickly as freshman forward Michaelene Cadiz (Lutz, Fla.) stole a pass from a Mercer defender and beat the Mercer goalkeeper to tie the game 1-1. Mercer's Anna Aspholmer put the Bears ahead, 2-1, in the 31st minute, scoring on a pass from Bengtsson. The Dolphins would not be denied as they again fought back, tying the game at 2-2, when sophomore midfielder Dianne Herlihy (Key West, Fla.) assisted on a sophomore forward Crystal Armstrong (Griswold, Conn.) goal. With just under eight minutes remaining in the match, Bengtsson tallied her second goal, which proved to be the match-winner and put the Bears up for good, 3-2.
The Dolphins remain on the road for their next match, as they travel to take on Atlantic Sun opponent Troy State on Wednesday, September 19, at 3 p.m.
