JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
Jacksonville 2 1 3 Belmont 0 0 0
JU freshman forward Michaelene Cadiz (Lutz, Fla.) scored a career-high two goals and junior midfielder Brooke Moore (Tampa, Fla.) added her first goal of the season to lead the Dolphins (7-5-1 overall, 4-2-1 A-Sun) to a 3-0 shutout of Belmont (5-9 overall, 2-4 A-Sun) Sunday afternoon in Atlantic Sun conference action at Ashley Sports Complex.
The Dolphins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute, when Cadiz scored her first goal, taking a through-ball from senior defender Kathy Ciriello and shooting a high, hard shot over the head of Belmont keeper Mikell Lucas. Cadiz struck again, to give JU a 2-0 advantage, just minutes before the end of the first half when she broke free in the middle of the field and beat Lucas for an easy open net score. JU got its final score of the afternoon in the 62nd minute when junior midfielder Vanessa Illanes' (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) corner kick found Moore's head for the score and a 3-0 lead.
The Dolphins maintained control of the match throughout, outshooting the Bruins 17-10 en route to their fourth conference victory of the season. Freshman goalie Stephanie Fowler garnered her fourth shutout of the season in the victory making five saves.
JU welcomed the return of standout senior forward Karen Novak (Coral Spring, Fla.) to the lineup. Novak returns after being sidelined with an ankle injury, which she suffered against Miami in the first exhibition match of the season.
The Dolphins will return to action on Saturday, October 20, when they play the first of a three-match road trip, against A-Sun conference opponent Stetson at 4 p.m.
