Oct. 20, 2001
DeLAND, Fla. -
Jacksonville 1 4 5 Stetson 0 1 1
Dolphin junior midfielder Vanessa Illanes had a career day, racking up a career-high three assists as JU matched its largest margin of victory in a 5-1 win over Stetson Saturday afternoon in Atlantic Sun action. The win improves the Dolphins (8-5-1 overall, 5-2-1 A-Sun) current unbeaten streak to four-matches. Stetson drops to 4-11 and 1-9 in the A-Sun.
The Dolphins got things going midway through the first half and never turned back on their way to the eighth win of the season. Illanes and sophomore Erika Chapman hooked up in the 24th minute for a JU 1-0 lead when Chapman took a well-played lead pass from Illanes for the score. Illanes struck again in the 54th minute, this time assisting senior forward Karen Novak who's header off the corner kick found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. The Dolphins increased the lead to 3-0 when senior defender Yvonna Rowinski fielded a pass from Crystal Armstrong to score her third goal of the season.
The Hatters ended JU's shutout bid in the 87th minute as Carrie Lorenz scored Stetson's lone goal to close the gap to 3-1.
The Dolphins would close the game out with a bang, scoring two goals within 15 seconds of each other in the final 1:43 of the match. Junior Kristen Holstrom scored the first of the two in the 88th minute on Illanes' third assist of the match. Freshman forward Michaelene Cadiz would score the final goal 15 seconds later when she received a pass from Holstrom to score her team-leading eighth goal of the season, giving JU the 5-1 advantage.
The Dolphins return to action when they travel to Buies Creek, on Saturday, October 27, to take on Campbell at 3 p.m.
