Women's Soccer Misses Chances In 2-0 Loss To UCF
Nov. 2, 2001
UCF got goals from Patty MacDowell and Becca Eshelman to beat Jacksonville, 2-0, in the A-Sun finale for both Friday afternoon at the Ashley Sports Complex. JU falls to 9-7-1 overall and 6-3-1 in league play, while UCF improves to 12-5 overall with 9-1 conference mark. Both teams will now look ahead to the A-Sun conference tournament next week in Orlando.
The match was one of missed opportunities for both teams. UCF looked to take a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when Allie Blagriff intercepted a pass from the Dolphin defense for a one-on-one with JU goalie Stephanie Fowler (Seffner, Fla.). However, her shot toward an open net was defended by sophomore defender Tara Greggains (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), holding the match scoreless.
The Dolphins first missed chance would come in the 35th minute when junior midfielder Vanessa Illanes' blast deflected off the left post. JU's second miss came in the 59th minute when Julie Petrauskas' shot caromed off the crossbar and over the frame.
UCF took advantage of its next opportunity when MacDowell broke the scoreless tie when she took a pass from Allie Blagriff to score on a shot inside the left post. In the 84th minute the Golden Knights' Eshelman fielded a pass from Brooke Asby to score, giving UCF the final 2-0 victory.
The Dolphins return to action when they host 24th-ranked Florida State in their regular-season finale on Sunday, November 4, at 2 p.m. at the Ashley Sports Complex.
