Women's Soccer Opens Spring Season

March 20, 2002

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU women's soccer team opened the Spring season on March 2, participating in the Third annual All-Florida Spring Classic at UCF. The Dolphins went 1-1-1 on the day, beating 2001 NCAA Tournament participant, Miami 2-1 and tying South Florida 1-1. JU then traveled to Gainesville to take on Florida in a single match on March 16.

The Dolphins faced USF in game one of the day. Erika Chapman scored JU's lone goal as the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation.

In game two the Dolphins matched up with Miami. JU came out with a 2-1 victory behind two second half goals by midfielder Vanessa Illanes.

JU faced its familiar instate foe, Florida State, in the third and final match of the day. The Seminoles proved to be too strong for the Dolphins as they suffered a 4-0 defeat.

The highlight of the spring came in the Dolphins' 1-1 match against a Florida team that is coming off of a 2001 NCAA Tournament Final Four appearance.

JU struck first, in the 75th minute, on Illanes' third goal of the spring to take a 1-0 lead. The Gators responded quickly, scoring the equalizer just four minutes later on a goal by Christine Johnson. Neither team could muster another score, as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Dolphins will play on three more occasions during the spring season.
