Women's Soccer Opens Exhibition Season at Florida

Aug. 22, 2002

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University women's soccer team will travel to Gainesville on Friday for its first exhibition match at 6:00 p.m. against six-time defending SEC champion Florida, which advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA tournament last season. The Dolphins will also play on Sunday against the U-19 team in an exhibition match-up, before opening the regular season with George Washington on August 30 at 4:00 p.m. at the UCF/Kappa Invitational in Orlando.

The Dolphins return eight starters from last year's squad, which finished 9-9-1 overall, and 13 players overall who saw significant action last season. Sophomore Michaelene Cadiz (Lutz, Fla.), the 2001 Atlantic Sun Freshman-of-the-Year, is expected to lead the Dolphin attack, after leading JU with eight goals last season. Sophomore Stephanie Fowler (Seffner, Fla.) returns in goal after playing every minute of all 19 matches last season and finishing fourth in the A-Sun with a sparkling 1.35 goals against average. The defense will receive a boost this season as it welcomes back sophomore Hanni Wenzel (Camano Island, Wash.), who was a first-team all-conference selection as a freshman, but missed the entire 2001 season with a foot injury.

Head coach Mike Johnson, who led the Dolphins to the conference tournament for the fourth-straight time, returns for his fifth season and has compiled a 54-25-2 record.
