JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University women's soccer team got a pair of second half goals from senior forward Vanessa Illanes (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) to defeat South Florida, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at the Ashley Sports Complex. The win is the first for the Dolphins over the Bulls in seven tries.
In the second half, Illanes was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick in the 63rd minute. Illanes stepped up and placed the ball high inside the right post past Bulls goalkeeper Breck Bankester, to put JU ahead 1-0. Illanes scored her second goal of the game in the 74th minute taking a cross from junior Inge Heiremans (Tremelo, Belgium) from across the field, taking the ball down to the left end line and lofting a perfectly placed ball over Bankester's head to make the score 2-0. Sophomore Stephanie Fowler (Seffner, Fla.) made nine saves in goal for the Dolphins.
The teams played to an even draw in the first half, as JU had limited opportunities on the offensive side and spent the majority of the half on the defensive side controlling the ball, limiting the Bulls to six shots.
The Dolphins host Elon in the second game of the JU-Brine/Dennis Viollet Memorial Classic on Friday, September 13 at the Ashley Sports Complex. Florida International and South Florida square off in the first game of the Memorial Classic at 2 p.m.
