JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University senior midfielder Vanessa Illanes (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) was named Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Year as the league office announced the 2002 Women's Soccer All-Conference Teams Tuesday. Sophomore defender Hanni Wenzel (Camano Island, Wash.) joined Illanes on the first-team, as JU was one of three schools with multiple players selected to the first team. Junior transfer Inge Heiremans (Tremelo, Belgium) earned second-team honors, while Ranveig Aas-Hanssen (Skien, Norway) was named to the All-Freshman Team.

Illanes, who is the second Dolphin in the last three years to be named player of the year, led JU in every offensive category during the regular season, finishing first or tied for first on the team in goals (11), assists (12), points (34) and game-winning goals (4). Illanes had a goal or an assist in all 11 conference games except for one, totaling nine goals and 11 assists. She is currently tied for 10th in the nation with 0.67 assists per game and 27th with 1.89 points per game.

Wenzel, who returned from an injury after earning first-team all-conference honors in 2000, started every game and played every minute for the Dolphin defense, while recording one goal and leading the Dolphins to six shutouts.

Heiremans tied Illanes for the team lead in goals with 11 and finished second in assists (7) and points (29), while notching a goal or an assist in her first nine games. Aas-Hanssen had a stellar freshman campaign, finishing third on the team in goals (9), assists (5) and points (23), highlighted by a five-game stretch in which she scored six goals and had two assists. No. 3 JU (13-3-2, 8-1-2) gets set to play No. 6 Samford on Thursday in Buies Creek, N.C., in the opening round of the 2002 Atlantic Sun Championship hosted by Campbell at 7 p.m.
