Women's Soccer Set to Face Samford in the Opening Round of the 2002 Atlantic Sun Championship

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The third-seeded Jacksonville University women's soccer team (13-3-2, 8-1-2 A-Sun) faces sixth-seeded Samford (13-6-1, 6-4-1 A-Sun) tonight at 7 p.m. in the opening round of the 2002 Atlantic Sun Championship hosted by Campbell at the Eakes Athletic Complex. JU is 6-3 all-time in the championship, making their fifth-straight appearance. The Dolphins captured their first Atlantic Sun Championship in 2000, earning their first trip to the NCAA Tournament. JU defeated Samford, 3-0, during the regular season in Birmingham on Oct. 5. The Dolphins handed the Bulldogs their first home loss and their first conference defeat as 2002 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year Vanessa Illanes (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) led the way with a goal and an assist. JU is currently tied for 15th in the nation with an average of 2.72 goals per game and tied for 25th with a .778 winning percentage.

The 2002 Atlantic Sun Championship continues through the weekend with the championship game on Saturday at 7 p.m.
