BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Jacksonville University junior Inge Heiremans (Tremelo, Belgium) scored eight minutes into the first overtime giving JU a thrilling 3-2 victory over Florida Atlantic in the semifinals of the 2002 Atlantic Sun Championship Friday evening at the Eakes Athletic Complex. The Dolphins advance to the final game of the A-Sun Championship, their fourth in the last five years, where they will meet top-seeded UCF tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. JU improves to 15-3-2 overall, avenging its loss to the Owls in the final game of the regular season two weeks ago.
In overtime, freshman Ranveig Aas-Hanssen (Skien, Norway) found Heiremans at the top of the box and Heiremans ripped a shot over the head of Owls' keeper Molly Keating in the 98th minute for the triumphant victory.
FAU struck first as Julie Ferguson put the Owls in front 1-0 scoring an unassisted goal in the 44th minute just before halftime. Heiremans scored her first of two goals in the 59th minute taking a cross from Kristen Holstrom and with a one touch tied the game, 1-1. Janine Aylward gave the Owls' a 2-1 lead in the 83rd minute, but freshman Suzanne Fossum (Bainbridge, Wash.) sent the game into overtime scoring an unassisted goal, her first collegiate, in the 89th minute setting the stage for Heiremans.
JU faces top-seeded UCF, who defeated Jacksonville State, 3-0, in the other semifinal, tomorrow evening for the Atlantic Sun Championship at 7 p.m.
