BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Jacksonville University women's soccer team fell to UCF, 3-2, in the final of the Atlantic Sun Championship Saturday evening at the Eakes Athletic Complex. The Dolphins, playing their third game in as many days, finish the season 15-4-2, their second-best record in school history. Atlantic Sun Player of the Year Vanessa Illanes (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) was named to the all-tournament team along with junior Inge Heiremans (Tremelo, Belgium), sophomore Hanni Wenzel (Camano Island, Wash.) and freshman Ranveig Aas-Hanssen (Skien, Norway).
The Golden Knights, who won their second-straight A-Sun Championship and earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, took an early 1-0 lead as Allison Blagriff scored an unassisted goal in the 8th minute. JU answered right back two minutes later as Heiremans scored an unassisted goal, her third in the last two games, to tie the game 1-1. Illanes gave the Dolphins a 2-1 lead at the half scoring off a free kick in the 39th minute, with Heiremans collecting the assist.
JU had a one-goal lead heading into the second half, but the Golden Knights caught a break as the Dolphin defense scored on their own goal attempting to clear a corner kick in the 51st minute. With the game tied, freshman Courtney Baines scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute, her first of the season, giving UCF the 3-2 victory.
JU must now wait until Monday when the NCAA announces the field for the 2002 NCAA Tournament to see if they will receive an at-large bid.
