MACON, Ga. - Senior midfielder Inge Heiremans (Tremelo, Belgium) recorded a hat trick and added two assists, while sophomore forward Ranveig Aas-Hanssen (Skien, Norway) added a pair of goals as the Dolphins scored six goals in the first half en route to a 9-1 win over Mercer in A-Sun women's soccer action, Sunday in Macon. The nine goals scored in a single match are the most since JU defeated Howard, 9-0, on Sept. 8, 2000. The Dolphins improve to 5-6 overall, and 3-1 in A-Sun play.
Heiremans gave JU an early 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal less than two minutes into the match. Three minutes later, Aas-Hanssen scored off a pass from freshman Morgan Marinell (Ft. Myers, Fla.), making it 2-0. In the 12th minute, freshman Debbie Arias (Winter Haven, Fla.) dished the ball to Heiremans, who scored her second goal of the day from the right side of the box. Mercer (3-6-2, 0-2-1 A-Sun) answered in the 27th minute as Lindsey Wezgryn took a direct kick and netted a goal to make it 3-1.
Aas-Hanssen scored her second goal in the 41st minute when she received a pass from Heiremans and scored from inside the box. Senior Dianne Herlihy (Key West, Fla.) scored her first goal of the season a minute later, unassisted, before sophomore Regan Rone (South Amboy, N.J.) tallied a goal in the 44th minute, from Heiremans, to give JU a 6-1 halftime lead.
The Dolphins continued the offensive attack in the second half as junior Erika Chapman (Bradenton, Fla.) scored in the 62nd minute off a pass from senior Erin Bitterli (St. Petersburg, Fla.). Five minutes later, Heiremans scored her third goal of the match on a penalty kick, giving JU an 8-1 lead. Freshman Jenny Borschel (St. Petersburg, Fla.) added the final tally with less than a minute to go in regulation.
The Dolphins return to action when they play at USF in non-conference action on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m.
