Women's Soccer Drops 3-1 Decision to Miami in the Kick Out Cancer Match
Sept. 21, 2004
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman forward Jess Newport (Forked River, N.J.) scored her first career collegiate goal, but it was too little, too late as Miami (2-4) defeated the Jacksonville University (1-5-1) women's soccer team, 3-1, in the Kick Out Cancer Match at Patton Park Tuesday afternoon. The match, in conjunction with the silent auction ongoing at judolphins.com, is raising money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation's Peleton Project.
In the first half, the teams battled hard without finding the nets. In the 13th minute, JU redshirt freshman forward Stephanie Elgie (London, Ontario) tried to loop a shot over Miami goalkeeper Lauren McAdam, but the shot did not drop soon enough, keeping the Dolphins off the board.
Miami wasted little time in the second half, scoring in the 51st minute when Anik Huffman poked in a cross from the back post from Jyene Mack, who was serving in the ball off a Lauren Berardicurti throw-in. The Hurricanes scored again in the 73rd minute on a Lindsey Yach penalty kick to take a 2-0 lead.
A steady 20 miles-per-hour wind with gusts up to 35 mph played a factor in the match, batting down what looked like good shots on the north end of the field and even blowing a goal in for the Hurricanes. In the 76th minute, Miami's Britney Butcher made a looping shot that hit the crossbar, bounced off the right post and fell into the nets to give the Hurricanes the 3-0 lead.
JU answered on Newport's penalty kick in the 79th minute. The Dolphins had one other opportunity to score late, when Newport struck what seemed to be a solid shot towards goal. But the winds held the ball up, keeping it 10 yards away from goal by the time Miami's Alex Alford caught it outside the goal mouth.
Miami outshot the Dolphins, 20-9 and took more corner kicks than JU, 6-4. JU sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Kmiotek (Tampa, Fla.) had seven saves in the contest.
JU travels to Nashville to open Atlantic Sun Conference play this week, taking on Lipscomb Thursday at 8 p.m. ct, before facing Belmont Saturday at noon.
Goals: JU-Jess Newport (penalty kick) 78:16, UM-Anik Huffman (Jyene Mack, Lauren Berardicurti) 50:40, Lindsey Yach (penalty kick) 72:41, Britney Butcher (unassisted) 75:42. Shots on Goal: JU-5, UM-10. Corner Kicks: JU-4, UM-6. Saves: JU-7 (Michelle Kmiotek 7), UM-4 (Lauren McAdam 3, Alex Alford 1).
