Women's Soccer Breaks Through with 2-0 Win vs. Tulane in UCF Invite
Sept. 12, 2004
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Jacksonville University women's soccer team earned their first win of the 2004 season, beating Tulane, 2-0, on the final day of the UCF Fall Invitational at the UCF Soccer Complex in Orlando, Fla. The win is Chris Kouns' first at JU and moves the Dolphins to 1-3-1 on the campaign, while Tulane falls to 2-3-1.
Sophomore midfielder Hilary Bricken (Ft. Myers, Fla.) got the Dolphins on the board in the first half at 33:30, scoring off a corner kick served into the penalty box by junior midfielder Amber Otto (DeLand, Fla.) and flicked to Bricken by sophomore midfielder Jenny Borschel (St. Petersburg, Fla.). Borschel scored JU's second goal of the afternoon in the 81st minute, getting an assist from freshman midfielder Courtney Eppleman (Tuckerton, N.J.), to give the Dolphins the 2-0 victory.
"The first half was the best soccer I've seen us play so far," said Kouns. "Every player contributed to our effort today, and that made the difference for us."
The Dolphins took more shots on goal than the Green Wave, 6-4, while JU held the edge in corner kicks, 2-3. JU sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Kmiotek (Tampa, Fla.) had four saves to record her second shutout of the season. Borschel's three-point effort was the second of her collegiate career, tying her goal and assist effort against Florida International in 2003.
JU's next contest is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Florida State at 7 p.m. in Tallahassee, Fla.
