Women's Soccer Settles for 2-2 Tie vs. Campbell
Oct. 23, 2004
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A pair of goals by freshman forward Jess Newport (Forked River, N.J.) did not hold up, as Atlantic Sun Conference leader Campbell (9-1-6, 6-0-3 A-Sun) rallied for two goals in the final 20 minutes of regulation to force a 2-2 draw with Jacksonville Saturday afternoon at the Ashley Sports Complex. With her two-goal performance, Newport recorded her fourth and fifth goals of the season to lead the Dolphins (4-8-4, 3-3-3 A-Sun) to their second straight tie.
Newport posted her first goal on a penalty kick in the 25th minute after Campbell goalkeeper Erin Switalski received a yellow card for taking down Newport just inside the penalty box. She gave JU a 2-0 lead in the 61st minute, when redshirt freshman Stephanie Elgie (London, Ontario) passed the ball to Newport on the right side of the goal, who finished for her second score.
Campbell started their comeback in the 71st minute, as Cadian Lawrence shot the ball past JU keeper Michelle Kmiotek (Tampa, Fla.) to cut the lead to 2-1. The Fighting Camels tied up the match 11 minutes later, as Danielle Mandela settled a high ball in the box and found the net.
The Camels thought they had gotten a win in the first overtime, when Lawrence headed in a rebound at the 93-minute mark. However, Campbell was called offsides, erasing the apparent goal.
The Camels outshot JU, 7-6, and took eight corner kicks to the Dolphins' two.
The Dolphins take on rival Stetson Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 4 p.m. at the Ashley Sports Complex. The winner will be assured of a spot in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships in Buies Creek, N.C.
